    What’s the biggest truck you can drive on a car licence?

    Simple answer:

    • You’re driving a 7.5t vehicle for hire or reward
    • It’s part of your job (e.g. delivery driver, recovery operator)
    • It’s purely private use
    • Driving a motorhome
    • Certain recovery exemptions (depending on use)

    Some agricultural / specialist exemptionsIf it’s for business, CPC is usually required even with C1 entitlement.

     

  • It’s based on Maximum Authorised Mass (MAM) — not what it weighs empty.

    Example:

    • A van that weighs 2.5t empty but has a MAM of 3.5t → counts as 3.5t
    • A recovery truck that weighs 4.2t empty but has a MAM of 7.5t → counts as 7.5t

    Recovery trucks – Special note

    For a 7.5t recovery truck, you typically need:

    • C1 licence
    • Possibly C1+E if towing another vehicle on a trailer
    • CPC if operating commercially
